Oven cleaning in Heavitree

Oven cleaning in Heavitree, where Victorian terraces off Fore Street mostly mean a compact rear kitchen and a cooker wedged into an old chimney recess.

The chimney breast decides the cooker

Heavitree is dense Victorian and Edwardian terracing either side of Fore Street and Well Street, and the kitchens follow a pattern. The original chimney breast at the back of the house is now the place the cooker lives, and the width of that recess has quietly decided what appliance every owner since has been able to buy.

That matters for cleaning more than it sounds. A cooker in a recess has two side gaps of an inch or two, and those gaps collect everything: fat that has run down the side, crumbs, the corner of a tea towel from years ago. Pulling a freestanding cooker forward to get at them is often the single biggest visible difference in the whole job, and it is also the point at which people find out what the floor under it looks like.

Where the cooker is built in under a worktop instead, it stays where it is and the work is all inside the cabinet. Either way, the two hour minimum covers the overwhelming majority of ovens in these houses.

Small kitchens, and working around one person's day

A rear extension kitchen in a Heavitree terrace is not large. There is often one run of units, a small table, and a door out to a yard or a narrow garden. Setting up a soaking tray and sheeting the floor takes planning rather than space, and the job is quieter and less disruptive than people expect once it is running.

It helps to know in advance whether the back door opens onto somewhere the racks can go while they soak. On a dry day that solves the space problem completely. Where it does not, everything stays inside and the tray goes wherever it is least in the way, which is usually where the dog was planning to sit.

A dense street, a busy road and a lot of rentals

Parking around Fore Street is on street and it is tight, particularly near the shopping parade and around the hospital end towards Wonford. Ten minutes carrying kit is fine; it is worth flagging a really awkward address so the slot allows for it.

There is a considerable amount of rented housing through Heavitree, some of it let to hospital staff and some to students spilling out from the university side, so end of tenancy work here is steady all year rather than concentrated in the summer. Photographs before and after come as standard on those jobs, because on a shared house the question of who left the oven in that state is worth having an answer to.

Burner parts that have wandered over the years

A gas hob in a house that has been lived in for forty years accumulates a particular fault. Caps and crowns get taken off for cleaning, put back on the wrong burner, and stay there. They look almost identical and they are not: a small burner crown on a large burner base gives a flame that lifts and roars, and the reverse gives one that will not get a pan hot.

Everything comes off during the clean anyway, so it costs nothing to put the right part back on the right ring while it is happening. People are often more pleased about that than about the oven, because they had assumed for years that one burner was simply broken.
