Oven cleaning in Alphington

Alphington is mostly family housing: post-war and later estates around an older village core, with the trading estate on one side and open ground towards the Exe on the other. The kitchens are ordinary in the best sense, and they are used every day by households cooking for four or five people.

That use shows in a specific way. Roasting is what dirties an oven fastest, and a household that does a roast most Sundays and a tray bake twice a week builds carbon on the cabinet roof far quicker than one that mostly reheats. It is not neglect, it is cooking, and it is why the sensible interval here is closer to once a year than once every three.

Most of these are fitted single or double ovens under or beside a worktop, and they sit comfortably inside the two hour minimum unless the hob and extractor are being added at the same time.

An island extractor is a different piece of work from one on a wall: it hangs in the middle of the room, it is visible from every angle, and it collects grease on the outside of the canopy as well as the inside.

It is also the one people most often ask to have done after seeing the oven come up. The filters slide out of the underside, they soak like any other, and the outside of the canopy takes a polish that changes the look of the whole room. Adding it to an oven clean on the same visit is efficient, because the sheeting and the soaking tray are already set up.

The older part of Alphington sits low near the Alphin Brook, and the parish has a history of water getting where it should not. After any flood event the kitchen is one of the first rooms dealt with, and a cooker that has been standing in water needs an electrician rather than a cleaner before it goes back into service.

Cleaning has a place afterwards, once an appliance has been checked and signed off, and that ordering matters. Nothing here is electrical work, and a cooker that has been wet is not something to plug in and test to see what happens.

There is a fairly clean split here. The older houses around Church Road tend to have gas hobs with cast iron supports, and the later estate housing towards the ring road is mostly electric, either ceramic or induction, with a fitted oven under the worktop.

They dirty differently and they clean differently. A gas hob is a strip down: caps, crowns, supports, all off and soaking, ports cleared. A ceramic top is a surface job, where the marks are baked into the glass rather than sitting on it and come off with a blade held flat and a cream cleaner. Neither takes longer than the other in a way that shows on an invoice, but knowing which one is behind the door decides what goes in the van.
