Cullompton is a motorway town now as much as a market one. A large share of the housing is late twentieth century estates and newer development, and a lot of households here leave early and get back late because the working day is in Exeter or Taunton rather than in the town.

That produces a distinct cooking pattern: quick weeknight food, a lot of oven trays, and proper cooking concentrated at the weekend. Tray bakes and oven chips are the specific culprit, because fat spits off a shallow tray onto the roof of the cabinet where nothing wipes it away and it bakes on hard over months.

The town sits on the valley floor and holds damp and frost longer than the higher ground either side. In a kitchen that shows up in a small but real way: an extractor filter that stays tacky rather than drying between uses, and a hood that grows a film faster than the same one would a few miles up the hill.

Filters get dried properly before they go back for exactly that reason. A wet mesh filter gathers grease considerably faster than a dry one, and putting one back damp undoes a share of the work that was just done to it.

The same damp is why a hob here is often cloudy rather than greasy by the time it is booked in. Condensation carries a fine film of cooking oil onto the cold glass, it dries, and the next day it happens again, which builds a haze that a spray cleaner smears rather than lifts.
